ACCREDITATION

IUS English Language School (ELS) has recently been accredited by EAQUALS (Evaluation and Accreditation of Quality Language Services), an internationally recognized accreditation body based in Europe.  IUS English Language School has become the 1st internationally accredited university English language foundation program in the Balkans by EAQUALS.

English Language School of International University of Sarajevo was inspected by EAQUALS in November 2017 and met the high standards required for EAQUALS accreditation in its first inspection. The teaching, the course programmes, as well as the course organisation, the learning resources, testing and evaluation were all judged to be of high quality. It was found that the institution takes great care to protect the welfare of its clients and staff, and all publicity materials produced by the institution are accurate and truthful. The Inspectors identified points of excellence in the following categories: Management and Administration, Assessment and Certification, Learning Environment, Client Services, Staff Profile and Development, Staff Employment Terms.

What is EAQUALS?

Founded in 1991, EAQUALS (Evaluation and Accreditation of Quality Language Services) is the leading professional association that fosters 'Excellence through Accreditation of Quality in Language Services' throughout the world. To support these aims, EAQUALS has established and published a demanding set of accreditation criteria. The EAQUALS accreditation scheme provides guarantees of high quality for language learners studying in EAQUALS accredited centres. EAQUALS Accredited Members are language teaching centres which have met the rigorous demands of the EAQUALS inspection scheme.

EAQUALS advises the Council of Europe on language policy issues and is a member of the professional Network Forum at the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML). The EAQUALS membership scheme brings together language teaching centres from over 30 countries and leading national and international organisations which actively support language education. EAQUALS also have specific cooperation agreements with a number of highly-respected international bodies which share their aims.

Accredited Members of EAQUALS offer a consistently high standard of language education that meet the world's language learning needs. EAQUALS grants accreditation by inspecting areas such as; Management and Administration, Teaching and Learning,  Course Design and Supporting Systems, Assessment and Certification, Academic Resources, Learning Environment, Client Services, Quality Assurance, Staff Profile and Development, Staff Employment Terms, Internal Communications, External Communications.

The Inspectors identified points of excellence in the following categories:

Management and Administration

It is an area of excellence because there is evidence of a strategic approach to management and an awareness of the economic environment, with proven ability to adapt to changing internal and external situations, and of planned and organised management of change, and a readiness to innovate. There is clear evidence of leadership, combined with a readiness to delegate and involve staff in the development of the institution.

Assessment and Certification

It is an area of excellence because assessment is used for formative as well as summative purposes, and students have the opportunity to seek one-to-one feedback on assessment and on their progress during teachers’ published office hours. A broad range of assessment techniques is used, combining standardized tests, exams, continuous assessment etc. Assessment procedures are exceptionally comprehensive, professional, clearly documented, thoroughly checked and efficiently administered, with great attention paid to security, resulting in a very high level of fairness and reliability. Reports and certificates provide extremely clear and personalized assessment of learners and include accurate and useful information for employers, universities etc.

Learning Environment

The learning environment is an area of excellence because there is an exceptional range of facilities and opportunities outside the classroom such as the cafeteria, the infirmary, the sports facilities, the library, the computer areas, the University student clubs and societies. Free wifi is fully available in the central atrium space where students sit and relax. All the premises and study facilities are accessible for learners in wheelchairs or with impaired mobility, and the institution accepts disabled students.

Client Services

Client Services are excellent because the range and quality of advice and information available to learners is extremely good, including informative documentation. There is an outstandingly good range of leisure events, activities and/or facilities designed to promote sports or to stimulate interest in hobbies and other leisure activities, and exceptional attention is paid to learners’ safety and welfare to ensure they are safeguarded at all times.

Staff Profile and Development

It is an area of excellence as professional performance and development reviews and/or appraisal procedures are extremely thorough, systematic and supportive of professional and career development. There is a high proportion of staff with an above basic level of competence and experience. The institution is supportive towards staff undertaking additional training or professional development by, for instance: allowing flexible working hours and/or covering staff during absence for training, attendance conferences etc, and providing a degree of financial support for training, attendance at conferences etc.

In line with Bosnia Herzegovina law and International University of Sarajevo HR policy English Language School provides very good terms and conditions, safeguarding staff security and assuring staff welfare. There are opportunities for permanent or continuous employment for a significant proportion of staff, and for promotion and career progression.
